Principle of Fidyah
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have a choice to either fast or to feed a poor person for every day missed.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184)
Have some questions you’d like answered?
- Individuals with chronic illnesses or permanent health conditions.
- Elderly people who are physically unable to fast.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women if fasting poses risks to their health or their child’s health and they cannot make up the missed fasts later.
- Fidyah involves feeding one poor person for each missed fast.
- The cost is based on two meals or their monetary equivalent.
- Example: Missing 30 fasts means feeding 30 people.
Fidyah ensures that those who cannot fast can still reap the blessings of Ramadan by helping others in need. It reflects the Islamic values of compassion, care, and community.
